date or die

additional post

i just wanted to make another quick post about something i’ve wanted to say ever since the demo came out

to everyone who’s drawn fanart, written fanfic, anyone who’s made even a single post in the tag, thank you so so much!!! i can’t even believe people have written stuff for us - the reception for this has still felt so surreal. none of us really expected date or die to blow up the way it did, and it means the world and then some to us.

i really wish that this blog wasn’t kept exclusively for dev posts, so i could reblog every piece of fanart to show it off. all of it has been so wonderful, even the horny host fanart, especially the horny host fanart. it’s all lovely and it’s hard not to send everyone thank you messages for it all, but as is, i hope you don’t mind me just saving all of it to my computer and sharing it within the team. all of us yell and jump up and down about it - yes, every piece. no matter what, it’s loved and appreciated so much more than we can say.

so, everyone, thank you, thank you, thank you.

November Update

Hi y'all. Sorry for the quiet. We’re still alive and Date or Die work is still going! Progress is slow because this isn’t anyone’s full-time job right now, but the team is doing our best. I (Arden, writer/designer) don’t use tumblr, so I forget to make update posts, but I’m very active on my personal Twitter account, @sproutella. This is where I talk most about the game in addition to making bad posts about other things.

Right now we’re polishing up our existing demo to have a much prettier UI - screenshots attached! - as well as putting together a new demo we hope to show at PAX East 2017. This will be a slightly altered version of the game’s prologue.

I’ve been hammering away at the script and I’m pleased with progress so far! I think the entire script will, fingers crossed, be finished by the time PAX rolls around. From there we’ll focus on art, funding, and implementing everything.

Thank you for your patience and continued interest in this project. It seriously means the world to all of us.

(game-relevant images below the cut!! -julian)

hi! julian here (artist/local terrible boy, tumblr user @killmurders but significantly more present on twitter with the same url) with some updates on what’s been going on in the ‘things you can look at’ department. the bulk of our current work is going into writing - strengthening existing arcs, nailing down character voices, and so on! so, unfortunately there’s not a lot of that that we can post without spoiling things that we don’t want to be spoiled.

here’s a couple little things + more info below them!  anything included here isn’t necessarily representative of the final product - at the moment, we’re more focused on getting the framework of everything put together as opposed to fine tuning the parts already in place. also, sometimes we just decide certain things work better as opposed to others! c’est la vie

nov1.png

because the lion’s share of the current progress isn’t visually based, most of what i’ve been involved in (aside from writing) has been UI updates! no more garbage default ren’py menus, thank god

anyway, here’s one of the drafts for a main menu! the idea behind this one was to be super over the top dating-sim style played straight, and also very, very pink. with a lot of flower petals blowing around probably. i’m still honestly very fond of this one

and this is the main menu as it exists in the current build!

the current options/setup menu! this one comes with sliders and everything.

i want to say again i’m sorry to anyone who was concerned about us - i’m a fulltime student with a day job so i post very little on tumblr, and as arden said they don’t have an account here at all! so if you don’t see us much here, don’t worry - we’re still on twitter and we post pretty frequently about game progress there. i promise y’all, we’re taking this game all the way to the finish line

ciao! 🔪❤️✨

September Update

Hi! It’s Arden again. I don’t have a ton to say for this month’s update other than “yeah, we’re still working!” but that’s still something, right?

Julian and I are both working on other paying projects to support ourselves, which means Date or Die’s development is slow right now. I could say it’s a ~labor of love~ but that’s just a way of sugar-coating the fact that no one on the team is making money from this and we have to be able to support ourselves and make a living! That’s important!

We haven’t revealed the last contestant yet, but before we do we’re switching gears to try to produce a demo. I’ll feel a lot more comfortable asking for financial assistance once I have a playable section to show people. Plus, when you’ve been working on something for such a long time without even a little scene you can play, it can somehow make your work feel like it’s not real. Even though that’s not true! Date or Die has so much work done on it already, but not being able to show it off makes it feel intangible.

I guess I’m saying this to remind other developers the importance of keeping in mind how much progress you’ve made. Even if you can put together one of your scenes with some placeholder art, being able to see the skeleton of something you’ve created in motion feels amazing and can inspire you to keep pushing forward! It’s hard sometimes, but I believe in you - we all do!

Hi! It’s time for another Date or Die character profile! Cheerful and empathetic, Hat Trick is a caring young woman who tries to carry everyone’s burdens on her shoulders if she can. Even in her day job - working at a bakery - she tries her hardest to leave a positive impact on people’s day, through saving a regular a favorite pastry or drawing a smiley face on someone’s coffee cup. In her free time, she does a lot of volunteer work, and one of her favorite things is teaching self defense classes. While she genuinely enjoys interacting with people, it can still be a nerve-wracking experience, especially given that she’s autistic. Social interaction is already troubling enough when you’re not trapped on a murderous game show with five strangers! FUN FACTS ABOUT HAT TRICK: She always smells like fresh bread. It’s fantastic. Sad commercials wreck her shit. Animal shelter ones wreck everyone’s shit, but sometimes she cries over particularly touching car commercials too. Her roommates don’t even bother to ask why she’s crying anymore, they just have a designated crying pillow at the ready. Hat Trick actually loves doing chores and cleaning. If you let her stay at your house for a night or two, she’ll go full Studio Ghibli protagonist and surprise you with a clean living room. Her nickname comes from the fact that she’s black, queer, and autistic. You know, a hat-trick ! The Host is a fucking dick! As always, the beautiful character artwork is done by Julian . I had help creating Hat Trick from the smart and lovely Gita Jackson . We hope you love our amazing daughter and that you can save her from the terrible hellscape she’s been put into. Follow the Date or Die dev blog to find out more and watch for updates!

Hello! It’s finally March, so hopefully the weather starts to turn more pleasant soon! It’s a frozen hellscape in New England but maybe this new Date or Die character profile can warm your soul…? Orlok is quiet, intelligent, and prefers to keep to himself - he’s not one for making idle small talk. He only likes to chime in to conversations if he has something very important to say. He works as a wildlife biologist, specializing in studying various species of bats. Several years ago he was in a motorcycle accident that left him with intensive scarring and resulted in him losing a leg - Orlok was naturally a little shy before, but that only made it more difficult for him to approach people. While it’s hard for him to open up to others and he can put on a jaded, cold front to protect himself, he isn’t mean or cruel, and cares very deeply about people he considers friends. Can Hero melt his icy facade? FUN FACTS ABOUT ORLOK: He loves painting. Especially painting butterflies. You’ll never hear him admit it, but his favorite thing to do to pass the time at home is to watch some episodes of The Joy of Painting and follow along. While he can be standoffish and aloof to other people, Orlok treats animals better than most people would probably treat human children. Bats cannot call you slurs. As part of his job, he spends a lot of time traveling to new countries and living in research stations in various places. He loves traveling and the solitude living in isolated areas grants him. Orlok’s nickname comes from the villain of the 1922 horror film Nosferatu , Count Orlok. The Host likes movies! He’s also an enormous asshole. Character art by Julian . ☆ Happy Valentine’s Day from the Date or Die team! ☆

We’re excited to say that after a brief break, we’ve resumed production on Date or Die! Please expect this space to be much more active in the coming weeks - we still have a lot of characters to announce and a Kickstarter to launch! As always, you can check out our blog for more information on the game!

Hi there! It’s been a little while, hasn’t it? It’s about time we showed off another Date or Die contestant! (But first, maybe look back at Hero and Mesmer to refresh your memory of how cute our cast is?)
Six is a shy, polite individual with strong ties to the paranormal. They’ve lived a very sheltered existence in a fairly isolated commune, coming from a long line of spirit mediums. Most of her time has been spent honing her mediumship abilities and ability to communicate with spirits under the watchful guidance of her family and other people at the commune. People from all over travel to see them, often asking for help speaking to a deceased loved one - closure Six is honored and happy to provide. Believing that every life has value, he cares deeply about others (even strangers), often to the point of neglecting his own needs. Will Six’s unique talents help the other contestants escape, or will she become one of the ghosts she speaks to?
  FUN FACTS ABOUT SIX:
He loves cooking, especially baking - any sweet you’ve even heard of, he’ll be delighted to make!
They don’t get along with Mesmer. Mesmer thinks Six is an incredibly convincing con artist and doesn’t believe in their ability to speak to the dead, an accusation that upsets them to no end.
She has a secret fondness for cheesy romance novels and shoujo manga, and kept an enormous stash under her bed at home to read at night.
Six’s nickname comes from the movie The Sixth Sense … The Host isn’t very creative with these names.

It’s time for another profile! Last time we showed you Hero, the game’s protagonist . Let’s take a look at one of Date or Die ’s contestants!
Mesmer is charming, sociable, and always flawlessly dressed. The young, handsome man is something of a celebrity - he is a mentalist , although he also performs dazzling stage magic on occasion. His natural easygoing and friendly nature have helped propel him to stardom, with multiple TV specials and sold-out stage performances. While he often seems bashful and humble about his skills in interviews, he becomes a different person while in his element, performing incredible mental feats with amazing precision and control while simultaneously managing to make it all look effortless. Can such a sharp mind survive the deadly game of Date or Die , or will this be the trickster’s final act?
  FUN FACTS ABOUT MESMER:
His signature seafoam green hair color was an accident - he tried to dye it blue when he was a teenager, but loved the color so much he’s kept it ever since.
Out of all the contestants, he’s the best at karaoke. Even if he’s not a particularly great singer, you will never see a more heartfelt and enthusiastic rendition of an ‘N Sync song in your life.
He first took an interest in mentalism when, at his sixth birthday party, he hypnotized the professional hypnotist his parents hired. Just to see if he could. Another parent was taking video and the footage went viral, jumpstarting his life in the spotlight.
Like we said in Hero’s post, the Date or Die contestants can’t remember their own names, instead going by whatever nickname The Host assigns them. Mesmer is because he’s… well, mesmerizing! (But it also comes from physician Franz Mesmer ’s theory about animal magnetism.)
As usual, the beautiful art above is done by art team member Julian . You can follow the Date or Die dev blog   to learn more or Twitter for updates about the game!

We’ve been a bit quiet lately, but rest assured we’re still hard at work! To tide you over until our next character reveal (coming soon!), take a peek at this sketch of The Host, the villain responsible for placing Hero and the other Date or Die contestants in their life-threatening predicament!

Today, let’s get to know the……………. HERO… of our game ;)
The protagonist of Date or Die is Hero , an enthusiastic and brave young woman. She wears her heart on her sleeve, and rarely sees a point in hiding or lying about her emotions, trying her best to always be open and honest. While she has a kind heart and is supportive and empathetic to people around her, she also never hesitates to defend herself or call out other people’s bullshit. She’s clever and resourceful - qualities she hopes will keep her alive long enough to find a way out and escape!
  FUN FACTS ABOUT HERO:
She’s really, really into MMORPGs, even though she doesn’t play other types of games much. It’s difficult to find one she hasn’t at least tried out!
She has a tendency to swear a lot, which usually isn’t a big deal, except for that one brief summer where she worked as a camp counselor with 10 year olds.
She can dance very well, and often does so in her apartment when she’s excited about something.
The cast of Date or Die can’t remember their own names, and are given nicknames by the Host… why did he pick this one for her?
Beautiful art by Julian ! Follow the Date or Die dev blog or Twitter for more updates on the game!

Hi! I’m Arden and I want to announce my next project!
Date or Die is a visual novel about love, mainstream media, and not fitting into the perfect image of what the latter considers the former to be. It’s a project I’ve been pouring my heart and soul into, and I’m really, really excited to be able to finally talk about it!
Ten strangers wake up trapped in an outrageously large mansion - there are no exits and they can’t even remember their own names. A mysterious man, referring to himself only as the Host, tells them all they’ve been chosen to compete on a reality TV-style dating game show called Date or Die , a twisted competition where being eliminated means death! The Host promises that the contestant who can best all the show’s challenges will not only get out alive, but will be introduced to their soulmate.
You play as a young woman who the Host mockingly nicknames “Hero” - can she outwit him and convince the other trapped, scared contestants to band together and escape, or will Hero play right into the Host’s hands and battle to the death in the name of love? It all depends on your choices!
Date or Die features a diverse, engaging cast of characters for the player to get to know and love, and then rips them away from you because I want to drink your tears! It’s been very much inspired by TV shows like Flavor of Love and The Bachelor and games like Danganronpa and the Zero Escape series.
My team is wonderful -  Julian is providing beautiful art and Jacquelyn  is coding for me. It’s being built in Ren'Py , and it will release in 2015 ! Oh my god! I’m so excited!
For more updates, please follow this blog or the official Date or Die twitter account. Or both, if you really want! We’ll be posting a lot of exciting stuff soon, including looks at the character’s you’ll be meeting, so please look forward to it!
